The client for this was the Frye Corporation. They requested an illustrated image for their web site. They originally had a photo version of this but decided that they wanted it to look hand drawn.

I'd been itching to experiment with some cross-hatching ala Franklin Booth, Alfredo Alcala and Rudy Nebres. Obviously, I'm not comparing myself to those masters (not even close) but those are the guys I had in mind when working on the idea.

Unfortunately, my office/studio has become more of a storage room since we moved so I didn't have the room to use real pens or brushes (ie, no place for me to use ink that the kids couldn't reach). So I ended up simply drawing all of the line work using Sketchbook Pro 2011. There's no comparison to the real thing but it got the job done.
One of my closest friends, Aris Iliopoulos, has a particular 'fun-ness' to his art that quickly becomes contagious. For as long as I've known him (almost 20 years!!!) he's always been sketching, whether it was on drawing paper, looseleaf or a good old-fashioned Diner napkin.

Here is a really rough sketch of his that I cleaned up and colored. I fixed some of his anatomy a bit too 'cause he's just &$^ing lazy sometimes.

Ah, I miss those Diner days! Here's to you, "Artie"!
(Color)I whined like a child about this one BIG time on Facebook. Sheesh. While it's not nearly as bad as I felt at the time, it was still a lesson in frustration for me. I just couldn't get it to look the way I wanted. Luckily, my friend Emilio helped me patch it up and tie the whole image together otherwise I probably wouldn't have even posted it. Thanks, E-Lo!

Hopefully, I'll just improve with each image.
Here are da colors for my last Batpic. I plan on doing one pic for each of DC's "Big Three" before moving on to some Marvel characters. Why? Well, it turns out that I've never actually done a complete color image of any of them...ever. As a kid, I used to strictly draw in B&W (pencil only) for some reason. Probably because I didn't have much access to color markers/crayons/etc. Anyway, here's Batdude...

I was messing around with a shading technique that I saw David Curiel (amazing colorist/painter) use in an image. Turns out that he in turn was trying to mimic a technique used by Marte Gracia. I saw it, loved it, tried to mimic it myself and...didn't do anywhere near as good as I'd liked. Ah, well. Try and try again...Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18040428054914992850noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5431843152489169651.post-37802364716474409982011-05-24T12:10:00.000-04:002011-05-24T12:10:51.161-04:00Just A Tweak, Ma'am...I was obsessing about the parts I rushed on that Bat-pic and I had to make up for my laziness. Bam! Thank you, Batman!Well, 6 months between posts isn't really too long, is it? Ok, whatever.

Here's my most recent take on Batman. I've tried drawing him maybe one other time in the past 10 years or so. I don't know why but I tend to avoid drawing the really iconic characters like Superman and Wonder Woman for some reason. I'm not exactly sure why but it probably has something to do with not living up to the material or something like that.

For this version, which I don't hate so much, I was kind of trying to mix in a little bit of the styles of Jim Lee and David Finch. Kind of. A little bit. I ended up getting lazy and rushing it at the end but this was really just an exercise for me anyway. There's lots to nitpick so feel free to do so, if you're so inclined. Until you bust your ass and become really successful (or unless you're incredibly lucky), this is going to be the true reality that you must confront head on. Denial will bring you a world of hurt. Just deal with it.
It took about 2-3 hours and I'm getting paid in cupcakes! Dulce de Leche cupcakes, no less!! I've never had Dulce de Leche cupcakes, so I'll post my review when I get 'em. Can't wait!

If you wanna find out more information about the "Color A Smile" non-profit organization, check out their website here: www.colorasmile.org.
I'm not sure how much I'm legally allowed to talk about it (or not), so for now I'll just post the pics along with some basic comments.

After these initial sketches here, I was asked to combine 2 of the characters: the second (angry-looking) guy and the dude at the bottom.

This next pic shows what I came up with. It was my idea to show him with a different, loud-themed outfit each time we see him. Still don't know if they're gonna go with that idea or not. Anyway, after this, I was asked to provide various expressions.

Here he is again displaying his emotional range along with a new outfit (I especially liked this one):
Hopefully, that will keep me motivated and drawing during the rare hours that I'm either not at work or spending time with the kids.

This is an image that I was inspired to do when I saw a gym promotion/poster on a bus stop that I passed on my way to work one morning. The woman on it was hot as hell and, being the incredible nerd that I am, I immediately thought to myself "Wow, that's Misty Knight!".

Long story short, I'm not 100% where I'm going with the picture yet. I want to aim for a Blaxploitation poster look but I haven't added any graphic design elements to the image yet. The text is there just because I was messing around with some fonts and I probably won't use either of the ones shown. I'm also not yet sure if I'll make my drawing look more sylistic or if I'll just stick with something similar to what I have here. Meh...

Anyway, because I love talking to myself and pretending as if there's actually someone else reading this, here's the inspiration photo for the above mess I'm creating. Bootylicious!!
Sheesh...

Oh yeah, and I changed the lineart again. Gonna redo the grayscaling and finish the whole thing up this weekend. I gotta get this done so that I can never look at it again. It's taken waaaaay too long.
But here's the latest: an in-progress pic of that Cammy image I first mentioned oh-so-long-ago.

There's still a lot of work to be done, with the head and face. I also want to try and figure out how to get the skin texture right (I'll probably just end up downloading one from somewhere). Anyhow, here it is (so far). Comments are always welcome.
It just looks better overall. I don't know what this says about the current state of my "skills" but I've decided to simply try and touch up/improve the original drawing instead of starting over from scratch.

C'est la vie...Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18040428054914992850noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5431843152489169651.post-28701529234173213882009-12-26T21:05:00.000-05:002009-12-26T21:05:51.738-05:00Cammy 2009I'm currently working on an updated version of the CAMMY pic I did back in 2005. I found all kinds of mistakes concerning her anatomy and proportions but I still kinda like the image overall. I also got really inspired by a photo from an amazing photographer on DevianART. To me, that looks like a real-life Cammy.

Anyway, here's an initial rough that I'm messing around with alongside the original line drawing from 2005. I'm still trying to work out the overall shape, composition and (most of all) her anatomy. The anatomy is most important for me because I really want to accentuate her muscle definition. Yes, I kinda suck at anatomy, especially when I'm trying to be as detailed as I can with it. Whatever. I'll do the best I can at this stage of my life. We'll see how it goes.

(BTW, I have no idea how to post these images side by side. I tried to get it to work but almost pulled my hair out in the process.)
Smoothed out the Hulk and still working on some of his details. I'm really hoping that I can finish this baby up by tomorrow, before my ADD kicks into high gear.
I still need to finish up that last sketch but before I do, I've decided to revisit an old image. Just for kicks.

This is a pic I did back in 2005 while I was still storyboarding TMNT. I'd never done my own rendition of the classic Hulk vs. Thing matchup and decided to finally give it a shot. At the time, I was pretty happy with the outcome.

But now, after 3+ years of directing a bunch of amazing artists for the Chaotic game, all I see is an incomplete image with some problems. Most of the issues I find are in regards to the anatomy and lighting but I think this is an image I can quickly patch up and finish. I'm looking at it as an excersise (and I'm also trying to avoid mind-f&*cking myself with a blank page).

So here I am, actually coloring an image and having some fun. This is what I've got done so far. I've laid down some flats and have figured out the light sources (each is being lit by an imaginary source eminating from their opponent's face). I'm also fixing up some of the Hulk's anatomy, to the best of my limited knowledge.

Next, I'll do the final rendering and post that once I'm done. Should be before the end of the week (totally giving myself a deadline).Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18040428054914992850noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5431843152489169651.post-54846672344406170982009-11-06T07:47:00.003-05:002009-11-07T12:14:37.031-05:00Crawling BackI've decided to "chronicle" my attempt to get my drawing mojo back after not drawing a completed image for over 3 years. This is most likely going to blow up in my face but my hope is to show others that if I can do it, they surely can.

Here's an initial rough for an image that started forming in me brain. The idea is for a heroic female figure leading some kind of rescue effort (I don't know why this particular theme came to mind but it just did). The lead character can be any female character: Wonder Woman, Intress, Xena, whoever. The inspiration for the baby came from my 6-month old daughter who is just the cutest little thing in the world (along with her brother). Yes, I'm a proud Daddy.

I'll show the progress of the image as I update it. Here's the initial rough:
But what to say...?

Well, for starters I'll talk about the title. It's something that an old family friend (more like an uncle) used to say every time he visited. Robert Eason basically grew up with my parents, having known them each separately while they were all in their teens.

He and his twin brother (both Black) were always hanging out with the Puerto Ricans, dancing at the clubs and falling for the women. Somewhere along the way they even managed to think of themselves as Puerto Rican without learning a lick of Spanish the whole time. In fact, he would even refer to himself as "Don Roberto" on the intercom whenever he visited.

Don Roberto passed away several years ago but I can still hear him yelling his signature greeting, "What it look like?!" whenever I think of him. To get the proper sense of how he said it, think of J.J. from Good Times. Yeah, it sounded just like that...

Since the title can easily refer to all things visual, I figured that it might be fitting for a blog that will (hopefully) have lots of artwork to show. Don Roberto, if you can hear this, always know that the family loves you and misses you dearly.

Peace!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18040428054914992850noreply@blogger.com2
